For an OEM planning a production ramp, the question is rarely whether to source from China. It is which partner can absorb your volume without your yield falling apart.

Where a product is genuinely electromechanical — a board plus harnesses, connectors, and enclosure integration — a supplier already fluent in cable assembly can eliminate an entire tier of coordination. What Actually Separates These Suppliers
Price per assembly is the least useful comparison you can make at quotation stage, because it is the number most easily manipulated. Three factors predict programme outcomes far better.
•Component sourcing discipline. Ask directly how the supplier handles allocation and end-of-life parts, and whether substitutions require your written approval. The answer to that second question tells you almost everything about how the relationship will run.
•Test strategy. AOI is table stakes. What matters is whether in-circuit test or functional test is included, who writes the test fixtures, and who owns them if you leave.
•Capacity headroom. A supplier running at 95% utilisation has no room for your forecast increase. Ask what proportion of their SMT capacity your programme would consume.
A Practical Evaluation Sequence
Shortlist three suppliers, not one. Send the same complete data package to each — Gerbers, bill of materials with approved manufacturer part numbers, assembly drawing, and test requirements — and compare the questions that come back. The supplier who asks about your panelisation constraints and thermal profile is engineering your board. The supplier who returns a price in four hours without a single question has not looked at it.
Then order a paid engineering build from your top two. A few thousand dollars spent discovering that a supplier’s documentation control is weak is the cheapest insurance available to you, and it is far cheaper than discovering it at 50,000 units.
High-volume assembly rewards preparation. The suppliers above differ meaningfully in structure and strength, and the correct answer depends on whether your constraint is cost, compliance, mechanical integration, or speed to production.
